Kresta in the Afternoon – August 16, 2021 – Hour 2

We are looking back at this classic episode of Kresta in the Afternoon. Today’s show originally aired on 3 January 2006 and is the first hour of Kresta in the Afternoon to air on EWTN Radio.

Why can’t schools teach about intelligent design?

Can schools teach intelligent design?  In the 2005 court case Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District, a district court judge determined that teaching intelligent design was an unconstitutional establishment of religion.  That case was never appealed and thus never went to the Supreme Court.  Richard Thompson of the Thomas More Law Center defended the schoolboard that wanted to teach intelligent design and evolution and tells us why it was a poor decision.

Listen to this segment:

Richard Thompson is the President and Chief Counsel of the Thomas More Law Center. As elected Oakland County, Michigan Prosecuting Attorney for eight years (from 1989 to 1996), his accomplishments included: successfully defending the constitutionality of Michigan’s Mandatory Life Law for major drug dealers in the United States Supreme Court, creating the state’s first Child Sexual Assault Crimes Unit, and developing one of the nation’s toughest no plea bargaining policies–which achieved a 98 percent conviction rate.

Intelligent Design vs Creationism

Which Makes More Sense?

Dr. Michael Behe of Lehigh University was one of Richard Thompson’s witnesses in the Dover case.  He joins us to discuss the debate between creationism and intelligent design.

Listen to this segment:

Michael J. Behe is an American biochemist, author, and advocate of the pseudoscientific principle of intelligent design. He serves as professor of biochemistry at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and as a senior fellow of the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture.

What is the true definition of Europe?

In 2005, the relatively new European Union proposed a new constitution for Europe.  The problem was that in its preamble where it discussed Europe’s long history, there was no mention of Christianity anywhere.  (George Weigel details this in his book The Cube and the Cathedral.)  Kishor Jayabalan director of the Acton Institute’s Rome office, Instituto Acton, joins us to talk about Pope Benedict XVI and what is Europe.

Listen to this segment:

Kishore Jayabalan is director of Istituto Acton, the Acton Institute’s Rome office.  Formerly, he worked for the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace as an analyst for environmental and disarmament issues and desk officer for English-speaking countries.
